Mayor thanks contractors for earthquake response

Hurunui Mayor Winton Dalley has expressed his thanks and appreciation to the many contractors who have worked hard since the November 14 earthquake to help repair the region’s infrastructure.

Mr Dalley says the response has been superb, with contractors working long hours in difficult conditions so that roads, bridges, water, waste and other services could be restored or at least made partially useable.

“Many of our local contractors got in touch on day one willing to help and the council is very grateful for the way they’ve continued to work hard, putting in long hours to assist us,” he says.

“Our appreciation is not only for those responsible for ensuring public infrastructure was up and running as soon as possible, but also to those who have worked tirelessly to ensure that private and business infrastructure was restored.

“This has meant that the effects on our local economy were minimised, enabling tourists to be encouraged back into our district and ensuring that our people with damaged homes were provided with some acceptable accommodation.”

He expressed his wish that contractors would enjoy a happy, relaxed Christmas and return in a refreshed state of mind so they could assist further in the region’s recovery in 2017.
