HYP Annual Leadership Camp in its third year

Back in mid-2009 the youth committees of the Hurunui Youth Programme (HYP) thought it would be a really good idea to have a leadership camp.

That idea became a reality and now HYP is preparing for its third annual leadership from the 5-7th December 2011.

Held at the Boyle River Outdoor Education Centre the camp is open for all potential leaders who are going into year 12 and 13 the following year. Youth who live in the Hurunui and will be going into year 12 or 13 in 2012 are able to register now by collecting a registration form at their library, Area School office or by emailing hyp@hurunui.govt.nz.

The aim of the HYP Leadership Camp is to help develop youth into leaders in their communities and specifically in HYP. The three day camp will consist of a variety of activities such as high and low ropes, tramping, abseiling, ABL games, speakers and much more.

The speaker for the 2011 camp is an internationally recognised New Zealand inspirational speaker Marcus Akuhata-Brown who grew up on the East Coast of the North Island.

Youth who attended the camp in 2010 said “It was fun and very enjoyable”, “WOW” and “This was a very worthwhile event, a productive way to meet new people and was at a great location”.

The HYP Coordinator Samantha Mould says “Taking a group of young people who may not know each other very well to begin with and throwing different challenges and experiences at them for three days is always rewarding; you watch them develop in themselves, team work and grow in front of your eyes”.

The Area Schools are very supportive of the HYP Leadership Camp and feel it works well as an end of year activity especially after a couple of weeks of exams.

Registrations for this year’s camp close Monday 24 October and spaces are limited so be in quick.
