Community Development
A sense of community spirit is identified in the National Research Bureau as
...a sense of belonging and togetherness, a pride in the area and a good
atmosphere among the people....
To some extent, due to their geographic diversity, the communities of the Hurunui district are forced to operate individually and often in isolation to each other.
Because many of the social agencies are based in Rangiora and Christchurch and are unable to reach entire communities, there is often a need for people in our district to look after themselves.
While this is a recognised strength within rural communities, we also need to appreciate each area is also part of a wider family of communities, each with its own, yet similar problems, issues and requirements.
Because we recognise the value of the five wards that make up our district working together to enhance community participation, we have engaged a Community Development Advisor to enable community initiatives through planned activities and projects.
These will assist our community to:
- grow strong connections
- facilitate and support developing projects
- interact and interconnect people across the Hurunui
- work in collaboration in a spirit of community connectivity
