Bokashi Composting
Turn Your Food Waste into Compost
Did you know - up to half of what we throw away each week could actually be of more use on our gardens?
Between 20 and 50 percent of what goes in the average rubbish bin is garden and kitchen waste and we are keen to stop it going to landfill.
That’s why we are encouraging residents, businesses and schools to recycle their organic waste.
All you need is an airtight container, to which you add bokashi (as a compost starter) – and the result is a nutrient rich compost produced in under half the time of normal composting.
You can use your own bokashi kit to compost:
Fresh fruit and vegetables
Leftover prepared foods
Cooked or raw meat and fish
Cheese, eggs and their shells
Bones (small pieces)
Coffee grinds and teabags
Dry leaves and wilted flowers
(Bokashi is made from Effective Microorganisms (EM), molasses and plant based material, such as sawdust, rice bran or wheat bran and is 100% natural.)
Kits are available at SPECIALLY DISCOUNTED PRICES for Hurunui Residents & Ratepayers.
